10. Compiling your reference list (or bibliography)
• Every assignment needs a reference list.
• Every source that you have cited in the text should appear in the reference list.
• Every source in the reference list should appear in your text.
• The references are in alphabetical order of the authors' family names.
Different disciplines use different referencing conventions, eg Harvard, APA, Vancouver, Chicago. Each one has is its own particular style of ordering and punctuating references. Check your unit outline to see which style is recommended.

Paraphrasing means re-telling what the original author said in your own way. You should have started to do this in making your notes.
Using referencing software
The UC Library has training sessions on how to use referencing software such as Endnote and RefWorks which can save you a great deal of time in inserting in-text references and compiling your reference list for your assignment.
Here is a sample reference list in the APA style:
Academic Skills Program, University of Canberra (n.d.). Acknowledging sources. http://www.canberra.edu.au/studyskills/attachments/pdf/apa.pdf. Accessed 2 March 2007.
Alter, S. (2002). Information systems: foundation of e-business. 4th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ; Great Britain: Prentice Hall.
IT job opportunities. (2005, September 13). The Australian, p. 33.
Monk, A. & Howard, S. (1998). The rich picture: a tool for reasoning about work context. Interactions, March-April, pp. 21-30.
The following table shows how to reference, in the APA style, different kinds of sources both in the body of your assignment (in-text) and in your reference list.
